Course Objectives

Upon completion of this Course, learners should be able to:

• Exhibit significant improvements in their understanding, and ability to interpret and
  apply relevant statutes governing Industrial Relations and Human Resource
  Management;
• Enhance their ability to conduct or manage any disciplinary matter in the workplace
  through a thorough understanding of the relevant processes and procedures;
• Develop a thorough understanding and appreciation of Court protocol and process,
  and;
• Demonstrate their capacity to effectively present matters before a Tribunal and the
  Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago.

Overview of Units

Unit 1: The Principles and Practices of Good Industrial Relations

At the end of this unit, learners will gain a deeper understanding of the concepts, functionality and processes involved in the concept of Law, Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management.

Unit 2: The OSH Act

This unit focuses on specific provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Ch. 88:08, as a key statute affecting all workplaces and for the purpose of understanding the practice and applicability of OSH in the workplace.

Note: This Unit includes a practical element - Completing a practical assignment which centres around the principle of Occupational Safety and Health.

Unit 3: Statutory Benefits

Essential insights for understanding how benefits under four (4) statutory instruments are calculated and applied in the workplace: Workmen's Compensation, Maternity Benefits, Severance Benefits and Common Law Benefits.

Unit 4: Workplace Dismissals

The aim of this unit is to understand the high cost of dismissals and be able to define, state and implement proper procedures and processes for dismissals in keeping with Natural Justice principles and good industrial relations practice.

Unit 5: Representation and Advocacy before an Employment Tribunal

Gain a fundamental understanding of what the High Court and Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago require from practitioners when appearing and presenting matters and the intricacies involved in the management of such matters, with particular emphasis on the procedures and protocols to be followed.

Evaluation

This Course will be evaluated through a combination of written and practical assessments, as well as class/course participation and attendance. There is no written exam, however, the final assessment will require learners to present/defend a dispute at the Industrial Court of Trinidad and Tobago before a sitting Judge of the Industrial Court.
