This programme will provide a foundational understanding of the principles and practices of good Industrial Relations and provide the tools to correctly interpret, understand and apply the laws governing the Industrial Relations system in Trinidad and Tobago. Participants will be exposed to principles related to effectively managing workplace issues such as grievances, collective bargaining, employment contracts and dealing with trade unions.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this Course, learners should be able to:
- Understand, identify and explain the fundamental procedures and practices of Industrial Relations in T&T;
- Explain the relevant statutes governing industrial relations and their implications for the practice of industrial relations in T&T;
- Demonstrate improved competence and decision-making capacity when faced with various workplace matters or disputes, whether in a unionised or non-unionised environment, and;
- Approach the practice of collective bargaining and workplace negotiations with greater confidence, and improve their potential for achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
Overview of Units
Unit 1: Industrial Relations in Trinidad and Tobago
The aim of this unit is to provide an overview of the history of industrial relations, as well as the practices and procedures which inform the system of industrial relations in Trinidad and Tobago, while embarking on a holistic appreciation of the sources of good industrial relations.
Unit 2: Collective Bargaining
Explore the essential criteria being utilised by stakeholders in conducting negotiations, and develop an appreciation for the sensitivities associated with Collective Bargaining.
Unit 3: Grievance Handling and Discipline
Analyse and apply the principles essential for successfully dealing with grievances and disciplinary issues in the workplace.
Unit 4: Trade Unions and Worker Participation in the Organisation
The aim of this unit is to provide an overview of the history of the Trade Union movement in Trinidad and Tobago as well as the functions, roles and responsibilities of Trade Unions specific to the workplace and develop a keen understanding and appreciation of techniques for creating a cohesive workplace environment through worker participation and engagement in relation to industrial relations.
Evaluation
This Course will be evaluated through a combination of written and practical assessments, class/course participation, attendance, and a final exam.
